Republican members of Arizona’s congressional delegation are calling for accountability after the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) raided former President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago home Monday.
“There are good, hardworking people at the Department of Justice and FBI who keep our nation safe and uphold our nation’s laws. Unfortunately, bad actors in these agencies have weaponized the Department of Justice to attack political opponents on the right and have declined to investigate political allies such as Hunter Biden,” Rep. Debbie Lesko (R-AZ-08) told The Arizona Sun Times. “If Republicans win back the Majority in the U.S. House, we will be investigating those who have abused our system of justice for political purposes, and we will hold them accountable to the fullest extent of the law.”
Rep. Paul Gosar (R-AZ-04) says the FBI should be dismantled, describing what he calls “police state” tactics.
“Joe Biden’s decision to green light an unannounced raid on President Trump’s home in Mar-a-Lago represents a shocking and scandalous effort by democrats to weaponize the FBI to go after their political enemies, the likes of which have never been seen in the United States,” said Gosar.
“Every American should be frightened and mad as hell by such unprecedented police state thuggery tactics and there must be a complete dismantling and elimination of the FBI. This is too much for our republic to withstand,” he said.
But one elected official has a different idea entirely.
Florida State Representative Anthony Sabatini (R-Clermont), also a candidate for U.S. Congress in Florida’s 7th Congressional District, says his state should sever ties with the DOJ completely.
“It’s time for us in the Florida Legislature to call an emergency legislative session & amend our laws regarding federal agencies,” he said.
“Sever all ties with DOJ immediately,” Sabatini continued. “Any FBI agent conducting law enforcement functions outside the purview of our State should be arrested upon sight.”
Trump’s Mar-a-Lago home is located in Palm Beach, Florida.
So far, Sabatini is on his own in expressing that sentiment.
But even politicians in Arizona have discussed invoking the 10th Amendment to keep the federal government out of the states’ business.
“The 10th Amendment can save our Republic, and the road to stripping the feds of power travels right through Arizona,” Republican gubernatorial nominee Kari Lake said Monday after the raid. “We must fire the federal government. As governor, I will fight these tyrants with every fiber of my being. America – dark days lie ahead for us. May God protect us and save our country.”
The 10th Amendment mandates that “powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.”
